Best Teams of the 1920s
Baseball was the “national pastime” in the 1920s. ... The most famous athlete in the United States in the 1920s was baseball star George Herman “Babe” Ruth, the right fielder for the New York Yankees. The colorful Ruth hit more home runs than any player had ever hit before. He excited fans with his outgoing personality.
Baseball was coming off its greatest scandal when the decade started. Within ten years, Ruth had transformed the sport in to what we recognize it as today. All but two of the stadiums of that era are gone except Wrigley and Fenway.
Ruth was not the only star to emerge from the decade. Other great players include Lou Gehrig along with Rogers Hornsby, Grover Cleveland Alexander, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, and Pie Traynor. The 20s also saw the end of Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson. Everything about the 1920s set up the next 80 years of the great American game.
The New York Yankees and the New York Giants dominated the 20s. It made it difficult to select 10 teams to make up the set. We hope you enjoy the teams we selected. Most of them include the World Series Teams we have listed separately in the WS section of our website.
